The Journal of Economic Literature (JEL) began publication in 1969 under the auspices of the American Economic Association with quarterly issues appearing in March, June, September, and December. JEL contains survey and review articles, book reviews, an annotated bibliography of newly published books, and a list of current dissertations in North American universities.

Responsibility for producing JEL is shared by two offices, one in Pittsburgh and one in Stanford. The Stanford office manages the Articles, Communications, and Book Review Departments of JEL, and the Pittsburgh office produces the Bibliographic Departments of the JEL print and electronic editions, indexing new books, current periodicals, and dissertations using the Journal of Economic Literature classification system.

AEA Members are entitled to receive JEL and e-JEL as part of their membership benefits. Libraries and other organizations may subscribe to JEL and other AEA publications.

e-JEL, the electronic web edition of the Journal of Economic Literature, provides the current quarterly issue of JEL with hypertext enhancements made possible by the World Wide Web publishing environment.

e-JEL includes the articles and book reviews from the current JEL issue in Adobe pdf format. e-JEL provides hyperlinked journal title, subject, and author indexes to the book and article citations and abstracts included in the current quarter in EconLit. e-JEL also provides author and subject indexes to dissertations awarded in North American universities during the previous year. The e-JEL archive contains Adobe pdf-format articles that have appeared in JEL since December 1994.

e-JEL is free to AEA members and is not available to institutional subscribers. The e-JEL web pages are password protected. If you do not have a password, click here. We ask that you read the copyright notice, which applies to the e-JEL web pages.

JEL on CD is similar to e-JEL because it contains articles, book reviews, and annotations of new books in pdf format. The CD also includes listing of the contents as well as subject and author indexes of articles in economics journals for the current year. The December issue includes a subject index of dissertations awarded by North American universities during the past year. The CD includes a cumulative archive from 1994 of the articles, book reviews, and indexes to new books and dissertations. AEA Members and institutional subscribers may elect to receive JEL on CD in lieu of the printed edition of JEL or they may receive both editions for a small fee. The JEL bibliographic sections are available in searchable format as EconLit-AEA for members and EconLit for libraries.

Issues of all three AEA journals published since January 2002 may be accessed online at IngentaConnect and Atypon Link. Online journals include reference links to available full-text documents, e-mail alerts of new issues, and searchable full-text. Institutions must have a subscription to the print or CD journal to add online access.
