The U.S. Census Bureau anticipates multiple job openings for economists. The Census Bureau provides an excellent environment for empirically-oriented economists to use confidential microdata on businesses/households, linked employer-employee data, and administrative records from federal/state agencies to conduct research on a wide range of topics. These topics include business dynamics (industrial organization, productivity, trade, entrepreneurship, innovation); labor dynamics (employment, earnings, education, worker flows); income measurement (inequality, mobility, taxation, assets, poverty, program participation); health (disability, health status, insurance markets, environmental health, mortality); household dynamics (family structure, migration, fertility); and disclosure/formal privacy.

Economists' activities include presenting analytical and methodological research at professional conferences; publishing in scholarly journals; writing descriptive reports for the public; conducting analyses to understand/ensure data quality; maintaining and improving data collection; developing data infrastructure; and responding to inquiries from Congress, the press, and the public. Experience with firm-, household-, and/or industry-level data, including from surveys and/or administrative records, is especially valued, as are skills in data manipulation, analysis, and big data techniques.
