Full Text of JOE Listing:
The Tobin Center for Economic Policy at Yale University seeks an exceptional candidate for a one-year, full-time Postdoctoral Associate appointment with the Health Policy Impact Lab for the 2026-2027 academic year. The Lab, led by Tobin’s associate Faculty Director, Prof. Zack Cooper, conducts empirical research on U.S. health care markets to inform academic scholarship and state and federal policy.
This position provides an excellent opportunity for an early-career economist to develop and advance high-impact research under the mentorship of Prof. Cooper. Ideal candidates have experience conducting health research, strong empirical and analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively. Their research interests include studying the functioning of U.S. health care markets. Working closely with Prof. Cooper and co-authors, the Postdoctoral Associate will contribute to rigorous, policy-relevant projects such as examining competition and pricing in hospital and insurance markets, the drivers of variation and growth in U.S. health care spending, and the broader economic and labor-market effects of rising health care costs.
The Postdoctoral Associate will gain valuable experience conducting health policy economics research, contributing to an agreed-upon project portfolio, and advancing their own research portfolio. The candidate will also participate in the department’s activities, including seminars and conferences, be open to opportunities for research collaboration, and provide consultations to graduate students interested in health policy.
Applicants must have completed their PhD prior to the start of the position. Given the one-year term, preference will be given to candidates who have secured a subsequent academic position that will begin after the fellowship year. The salary complies with Yale’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs compensation policy and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
