Any field. Our preferred areas of specializations are – but not limited to – economic history, finance, health economics, international economics/trade, law and economics, macroeconomics, political economics, public economics, econometrics, statistics and data science.

Xiamen University (XMU) was established in 1921 by renowned overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee, and is located in the resort-like island of Xiamen in Southeast China. Economics at XMU traces its origins to the Business Division at the founding of the university in 1921 with a long tradition of excellence in teaching and research. Under the leadership of Professor Wang Yanan, a former President of XMU and the Chinese translator of Karl Marx’s Das Kapital, the School of Economics (SOE) at Xiamen University has been one of the top programs in China since 1950s. As a strategic initiative to internationalize economics research and education, the Wang Yanan Institute for Studies in Economics (WISE) was established in 2005 with a strong focus on econometrics and other related fields.

The mission of WISE and the SOE is to nurture economic talents with cutting-edge quantitative skills and a global perspective that drive societal improvement, and our vision is to become a world-renowned leading Chinese education and research institution in economics. In QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, we rank the 78th globally in Economics and Econometrics. In U.S. News Best Global University Rankings 2026-2027, we rank 22nd globally in Economics and Business.

Having successfully recruited more than 100 faculty members from abroad in the past few years, WISE and the SOE still have faculty positions available in all areas of economics, finance and statistics at all ranks.

Junior candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. degree by August 2027 and show evidence of promising research ability. Senior candidates must have a Ph.D. degree and a demonstrably strong research record. Competitive salary, research grant and housing subsidy are provided, with a regular teaching load of 2 courses per year. Additional course(s) may be arranged with commensurate pay. All faculty members, regardless of their citizenship, enjoy a housing subsidy for the first four years.
