LUMS is Pakistan's premier academic institution. The Department of Economics at LUMS is a fast growing department of international standards and seeks rising and distinguished scholars to fill several permanent and contractual vacancies. The department currently has 25 PhD faculty members and is actively seeking candidates who specialize in Health Economics, Macroeconomics, Public Finance or related fields. Strong candidates in other fields will also be considered.
The department serves as an intellectual resource base that plays an important role in the making of public policy and is strongly committed to addressing pressing national and global issues, particularly focusing on growth, macroeconomic stability, public health, resilience, inclusion, and environmental sustainability, which are critical to the region’s economic and social landscape The department co-organizes an annual international conference- this year held jointly with the Econometric Society - fostering scholarly exchange and research collaboration. The department also offers dedicated research grants of its own, and every new tenure-track hire receives a research startup grant. In addition, the university offers research support through grants for both research projects and conference participation and houses several research centers that promote interdisciplinary collaboration.
The department also maintains strong local and international linkages with organizations such as the State Bank of Pakistan, the Federal Board of Revenue, Department of Health, Population Council, Planning Division, World Bank, the Gates Foundation, the International Growth Centre (IGC), and the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL). Economics faculty are also part of LUMS's National AI Hub, a Gates Foundation-funded initiative whose flagship focus on maternal, newborn, and child health offers rich opportunities at the intersection of health economics, data science, and AI.
The department places high value on quality teaching. Faculty also benefit from the LUMS Learning Institute (LLI), which offers a Faculty Certificate in Teaching and Learning, teaching and learning grants, workshops on course design and pedagogy, and one-on-one teaching consultations and observation. The medium of instruction is English.
