Full Text of JOE Listing:
The Department of Economics and the Environmental Science and Policy Program seek a tenure system faculty member to develop an internationally renowned program of research in environmental economics and development, with an emphasis on water resources. The position will be filled at the assistant or associate professor level. The search will continue until the position is filled. For most favorable consideration, applications should be received by December 5, 2014. Rapid urbanization, industrialization, agricultural intensification, and climate change are straining water resources globally. These challenges are particularly acute in developing countries, where critical issues of health, poverty, and productivity are closely tied to the quantity and quality of water, and where missing markets, weak governance, and political conflict may inhibit the efficient and equitable use of water resources. Potential areas of research therefore include, but are not limited to, the connections between water resources and human health and well-being, poverty and inequality, and agricultural and industrial activity in developing countries—and the role of markets, regulation, and political institutions in shaping the use of water resources. Successful candidates will be expected to develop a well-funded program of empirical and/or theoretical economic research that leads to high-quality economic journal publications. More experienced candidates are expected to have an established record of published research and grant funding.
This position is part of MSU’s Global Water Initiative—an effort to mobilize research expertise across our campus to address the world’s most pressing water issues. With over 100 faculty already working on water-related issues, the university has expertise spanning academic units within the natural, social, and engineering sciences. We are committed to pursuing research of the highest caliber, creating and testing solutions, and promoting better understanding of the challenges related to water. New hires will collaborate with current faculty and with each other to enhance disciplinary expertise, strengthen linkages across disciplines, and pursue external funding resources. Scholars with an interest in applying for this position are directed to the website for MSU Global Water Initiative (water.msu.edu), which contains more information and is updated regularly. MSU is an affirmative-action, equal-opportunity employer. MSU is committed to achieving excellence through cultural diversity. The university actively encourages applications and/or nominations of women, persons of color, veterans, and persons with disabilities.
