The Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies is one of the three departments in the Faculty of Business. The Department has the longest history in offering shipping, maritime and transport studies education and training in Hong Kong. It offers a full range of degree programmes in shipping, maritime and transport studies, as well as supply chain and operations management.
The Department takes a multi-disciplinary approach to establishing an area of excellence in Shipping, Port/Transport, and Supply Chain Logistics, spanning such diverse disciplines as shipping, maritime and air transport logistics, transport economics and management, environmental logistics, intermodal transport management, shipping finance and risk management, maritime services, shipping law and insurance, operations management, and supply chain management. The Department has established strong partnership with the shipping and logistics industries. It strives to be a key player in Hong Kong’s pursuit to become an international logistics hub and aviation/maritime centre par excellence.
The Department’s research portfolio lies in both academic and applied research, and consultancy for the shipping, operations and logistics industries, addressing both commercial and technological research issues. Departmental staff also provide professional services to the shipping, operations and logistics industries in the forms of efficiency and quality improvement studies, market and operational analyses, marine accident prevention and investigation, arbitration, and expert witness services. The Department also runs various self-financed programmes tailor-made to meet specific industry needs.

The appointee, if appointed as Assistant Professor, will be required to (a) teach and contribute to curriculum design and development at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels; (b) be an active researcher in terms of producing quality publications and securing research grants; (c) act as advisor and supervisor to students in groups as well as individually; (d) initiate, lead and conduct academic activities of significance and relevance to the discipline and profession; and (e) undertake administrative duties in relation to academic and departmental affairs, fundraising, departmental advancement, and public relations relating to Air Transport Management.
The appointee, if appointed as Professor or Associate Professor, will be required to (f) undertake activities as stipulated in (a) – (e) above; (g) provide leadership in all aspects of academic activities, including research, teaching and service in the Department; (h) engage in promoting research collaboration and grant-seeking, improving research publication output and increasing the level of consultancies in a related field; and (i) facilitate the Department in gaining and enhancing its visibility and international connections.
Applicants for the Assistant Professor post should have (a) a doctoral degree in a related field; (b) qualities of creativity, initiative and leadership; and (c) a strong commitment to academic and professional training and education.
Applicants for the Associate Professor post should have, in addition to (a) – (c); (d) experience in academic programme management; and (e) a high degree of proficiency in teaching and research in a related field.
Applicants for the Professor post should have, in addition to (a) – (e); (f) an excellent international reputation as a leading scholar; and (g) made significant contributions to and have impact on the related field.
Prior business/managerial experience in related industries will be an added advantage.
Remuneration and Conditions of Service :
A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment for Assistant Professor will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. An appropriate term will be provided for appointment at Associate Professor and Professor levels.
