Full Text of JOE Listing:

The Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics (FARE) at the University of Guelph invites applications from outstanding candidates for a Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC) in the area of Trade and Development Economics. The CRC program invests $300 million per year to attract and retain some of the world's most accomplished and promising minds to Canadian universities. Tier II positions are for exceptional emerging researchers within 10 years (excluding maternity/paternity and other leaves, if approved) from PhD completion, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field within 5 to 10 years. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a well-funded and high quality research program in trade and development economics as it relates to one or more of the agriculture, food, and bioeconomy sectors, train outstanding students and researchers, and participate in the department's teaching program at a reduced level. Potential areas of research may be although not limited to impacts of expanding globalization, increasing foreign direct investment, international institutions, trade and aid, domestic trade policies (etc) on trade and development in the agriculture, food, and bioeconomy sectors.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in an area of agricultural economics or economics. A strong publication record and demonstrated potential for innovative, leading-edge research and collaboration are required. This tenure-track appointment will be at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in FARE. An affiliated faculty appointment in International Development Studies (IDS) is an option and strongly encouraged.

Currently there are eleven faculty members in the department (http://www.uoguelph.ca/fare/). The faculty are well recognized for their high quality research, outreach, and teaching. For example, two faculty members are fellows of the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society. Two other faculty members are University Research Professors. Many of the faculty work in the area of trade and/or development. In addition, there is significant research outside FARE -- for example in IDS -- in these areas. As part of the Ontario Agricultural College (http://www.uoguelph.ca/oac), FARE has a long history of achievements in serving the agriculture and agri-food industries within Ontario and beyond.

The University of Guelph (http://www.uoguelph.ca) is a top-ranked comprehensive university in Canada with an enrolment of about 23,000 students. It is located in Guelph, Ontario (population of approximately 120,000) and is a one-hour drive west of Toronto, Ontario.

Complete information about the Canada Research Chair program can be found at (www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/). The successful candidate's research program is expected to correspond thematically with the University of Guelph's Strategic Research Plan (www.uoguelph.ca/research/).

An application, with a 2-3 page research proposal for the CRC (see www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/), a full curriculum vitae including publications, and letters from three referees should be submitted to: Debbie Harkies, Secretary to the Chair (dharkies@uoguelph.ca), Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of Guelph, Guelph, ON N1G 2W1.

Salary is negotiable and commensurate with qualifications. The review of applications will commence on August 25, 2014, and continue until the position is filled. All CRC appointments are subject to review and final approval by the CRC Secretariat in Ottawa. Our objective is to have the successful candidate start by July 1, 2015; the research chair position will be available once approval is received from the CRC Secretariat.

The University of Guelph is committed to an employment equity program that includes special measures to achieve diversity among its faculty and staff. We therefore particularly encourage applications from qualified Aboriginal Canadians, persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities and women. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
