The Center for Delivery, Organization, and Markets at AHRQ has openings for Ph.D.-level Economists in 2016. The Center includes a team of 30 Economists, Social Scientists and clinicians who conduct and sponsor cutting-edge research on healthcare affordability, markets and competition; payment and other financial incentives; and healthcare organization and delivery. The successful candidate will join a high-energy, nationally-recognized, multidisciplinary team within the Center that works on the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), an Agency flagship program. HCUP is a federal-state-industry Partnership that creates a family of heathcare databases and related software tools and products. HCUP contains the largest collection of all-payer encounter-level hospital care data in the U.S., covering 97% of hospital stays in the country from 47 states and emergency department database from 31 states. These databases enable research on a broad range of health care policy issues, including cost, quality and the efficiency of health care services; practice patterns; access to care; and outcomes of treatment at the national, State, and local market levels. HCUP has been used in more than 3,000 peer-reviewed publications, and is a highly visible data source for federal and state policy-makers seeking to identify or predict the impact on health reform or other policy changes on the quality, safety, cost, and equity of healthcare.
The successful candidate will join a team that conducts original complex research that leads to peer-reviewed policy-relevant publications in economics, health policy, and health services research journals; performs data analyses to inform the Agency and Department on emerging public policy issues; and manages HCUP contractor tasks, budgets, and schedules. We are interested in recent Ph.D.s or Ph.D. candidates who expect their degrees in 2016, who are interested in applied microeconomics, health economics, industrial organization, econometrics, and/or labor; and who have strong research, applied economics, and econometric skills. Other preferred skills include competency in SAS, Stata, and other statistical software; the ability to work independently and multi-task efficiently; and a desire to work in a multidisciplinary team-oriented environment. The positions have a salary range of $90,823–$118,069. We plan to interview highly qualified applicants at the January 2016 AEA Meetings.
