The U.S. Department of State seeks an experienced economist to serve as Deputy Chief Economist, beginning in early 2016.
The Deputy will partner with the Chief Economist in providing expert advice and guidance to the Department’s senior management on economic issues that impact foreign policy. The Deputy has particular responsibility for developing and managing the Department’s economic research program and supervising the analytical work of its staff of professional economists.
The successful candidate must be a United States citizen and have a Ph.D. in economics plus at least 7 - 10 years’ professional experience. The candidate will have demonstrated leadership and policy experience; excellent analytical capabilities, especially regarding the application of economic theories to the economic dimensions of foreign policy; and knowledge of at least two of the following fields: macroeconomics and international finance, international trade, innovation and the Internet, the economics of climate change, and migration. The position requires strong interpersonal and organizational abilities; persuasive oral and written communication skills; and the ability to foster professional relationships with a wide range of contacts.
