GAO has an opening for a senior public finance economist in its Strategic Issues team. GAO serves a critical role providing the U.S. Congress with non-partisan, fact-based, objective analyses on a wide range of government programs and policy issues. Work at GAO requires skills in applied research, effective interpersonal and teamwork skills, good organizational abilities, an ability to meet deadlines, and strong oral and written communication skills.

The Strategic Issues team assists Congress in addressing a wide range of issues. The primary purpose of this position is to lead or serve as a member of teams tasked with analyzing tax policy and tax administration issues, including reviews of the tax code and oversight of IRS and the broader tax administration community. Examples of recent work by the team’s economists include evaluations of the effectiveness of selected tax incentives for businesses and individuals, analyses of IRS’s enforcement resource allocation decisions, and estimates of corporate effective tax rates. In addition to collaborating on published reports, economists often participate in briefings of Congressional staff and support GAO witnesses at Hearings.
