About Our Research Team:
Based at Florida Realtors headquarters in Orlando, the research team's directives include the analysis of a wide range of current issues, trends, and policies affecting Florida real estate, as well as the production and dissemination of the association's widely-cited monthly Florida housing market statistics to the public, the media, and Florida Realtors members. The research team also maintains the most complete and comprehensive database of individual Florida property records and residential real estate listings currently in existence, derived from over 20 years of county property tax records and continuous data feeds from every multiple listing service in the state.
About This Position:
The Economist will develop, execute, and deliver quantitative research and analysis on current economic, demographic, and real estate trends in Florida, as well as the impact of various policy initiatives on Florida's economy and real estate markets. Research will vary from small-scale ad hoc analyses to more in-depth and rigorous explorations of trends, issues, and policies.
The Economist will collaborate with fellow research team members to deliver research results and related content to various audiences through a wide variety of formats, including short-form publications (e.g. blog posts, policy briefs, slideshows, and executive summaries), long-form publications (e.g. research reports, white papers, and academic journal articles), data visualizations (e.g. infographics, charts, tables, maps, and interactive web tools), speaking presentations, and online videos. This position will report to the Chief Economist.
Required qualifications:
- Doctoral or master's degree in economics or a related field.
- In lieu of a doctorate, at least four years of proven practical experience in quantitative research and analysis on topics relevant to the association's research agenda, such as residential real estate, commercial real estate, public policy, taxation, employment, housing affordability, demographic trends, macroeconomic trends, global economic conditions, mortgage markets, consumer behavior, or environmental quality.
- Proficiency in one or more statistical software packages such as Stata, R, SPSS, or SAS.
- Proven experience in sourcing, assembling, and analyzing macro- and micro-level datasets from various sources of economic, demographic, and real estate data and statistics (e.g. the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. Bureau of the Census, local government property tax records, etc.)
- Superior written and verbal communication skills, with the ability effectively communicate research findings to audiences of varying degrees of knowledge and expertise.
- A natural enthusiasm for objectively seeking answers to important questions and identifying previously hidden trends through data analysis.
Candidates with experience in any of the following areas may receive additional consideration:
- Work experience in applied economics within a think tank or policy research environment
- The use of dynamic modeling or econometric techniques to estimate the impact of proposed policies/tax plans on local and regional economic growth and job creation
- Building time series- or panel data-based econometric forecasting models
- Survey design and delivery, and the interpretation of survey results
- Creating well-conceived, powerful, eye-catching data visualizations with Microsoft Excel, Tableau, Adobe Illustrator, or various other software applications
- Data journalism experience
- Teaching/public speaking
- Using GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS) for economic analysis and to display research results from a geographic perspective
- Work experience in the real estate industry or in a closely related profession
