GAO (www.gao.gov) anticipates openings for economist positions. GAO is the oversight agency for the U.S. Congress, and we contribute non-partisan, fact-based, objective analyses on federal government programs and policy. We seek PhD economists and PhD economics candidates who expect their degree in 2017. Candidates must have strong applied research and interpersonal skills. U.S. citizenship is required.

Openings are anticipated in these mission teams:
Center for Economics (Applied Research and Methods) --- The Center is under the direction of GAO's Chief Economist, and it is a diverse group of 30 PhD economists who contribute economic expertise and analyses to GAO reports. Economists in the Center have the flexibility to work with all of GAO's public policy teams and across all sectors of the economy and government. [All fields may apply].

Education, Workforce and Income Security --- EWIS examines policy questions related to k-12 and higher education, employment, training, disability, and retirement security. Studies include analyses of student loan debt held by older Americans, proposed changes within the Federal Employees Compensation Act, the federal school-meals program, and state efforts to expand retirement saving program coverage.

Financial Market and Community Investment (FMCI) --- FMCI supports Congress by helping to ensure that U.S. financial markets function smoothly and effectively and promote sound, sustainable community investment. FMCI seeks a financial, housing or urban economist.

International Affairs and Trade (IAT) --- IAT work covers a broad range of international policy issues including, for example, bilateral and multilateral foreign assistance, international trade policy and finance, foreign affairs managements, and countering foreign threats.
