The School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) of the University of Pennsylvania is searching for a Director of the Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI), who would also hold a tenured faculty position, to begin on July 1, 2018. Founded in 1992, CASI is the first research institution in the United States dedicated to the study of contemporary India. A national resource, it fills an urgent need for objective knowledge of India’s politics and society, rapidly changing economy, and transformation as both an ancient civilization and major contemporary power. The Center’s key goals are to nurture a new generation of scholars across disciplines and to provide a forum for dialogue among the academic, business, and foreign policy communities.
The Director should be distinguished by intellectual merit that meets the tenure standards at a major research university. The search is not limited to academics in traditional appointments, but the successful candidate would have a departmental home and an established reputation with the academy and the broader community. We prefer candidates whose research has policy relevance and concerns development issues broadly construed. The search is open to scholars from multiple disciplines, including but not limited to anthropology, economics, political science, public policy and administration, and sociology, and the candidate must be able to foster work from multiple disciplines and across disciplinary lines. The candidate is expected to teach in appropriate SAS undergraduate and graduate programs.
The successful candidate will have strong networks with scholars and relevant practitioners in India and a demonstrated capacity to direct a pre-eminent center, including skills of institutional entrepreneurship, constituency-building, staff development, governance, finances, fundraising, and overall management. These skills may have been acquired in either an academic or non-academic setting.
Appointment as Director will be for a five year renewable term. The Director will also hold the Madan Lal Sobti Chair for the Study of Contemporary India.
Please submit an application at http://facultysearches.provost.upenn.edu/postings/1303 Include a letter of interest and a current curriculum vitae or resumé. Applications will be considered as they are received, and continue until the position is filled.
