The University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research (ISR) is seeking candidates for an open-rank appointment in the research professor track, with the potential for a joint appointment in a tenure-track position in the University of Michigan School of Information or another school or college. ISR seeks to recruit outstanding researchers with interests related to information science, including data curation, computational social science, and health informatics, especially researchers focusing on the intersection of information science with research on racial, ethnic, gender, and/or socioeconomic inequality.
The Institute for Social Research, founded in 1949, is one of the world’s leading interdisciplinary social science research institutions. ISR’s five research centers – Center for Political Studies, Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, Population Studies Center, Research Center for Group Dynamics, and Survey Research Center – span a wide range of disciplines and methodological approaches. Research faculty positions in ISR include 100% ISR appointments as well as joint appointments with many departments and colleges across the university. The School of Information is home to vibrant research and teaching programs, with 59 core faculty, and nearly 850 students. The school offers four degrees: a Ph.D., a Master of Science in Information, a Master of Health Informatics, and a Bachelor of Science in Information. The mission of the School of Information is to create and share knowledge to help people use information -- with technology -- to build a better world. A successful candidate for a position in the School of Information will be committed to, and will directly contribute to the school’s goal of being the best research and teaching institution for the understanding and design of information and its technologies in service of people and society.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in an area such as social science, information, computer science, engineering, health informatics, or related field by the time the position begins.
Senior candidates should demonstrate experience and success with externally-funded research, along with a national reputation and strong publication record.
