Position Announcement


Title: Assistant/Associate Professor, Economics of Agricultural Financial Markets

Description: The Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics is seeking to fill a tenure-track position in the area of agricultural financial markets, an essential component of modern commercial agriculture in Illinois and the nation.

Responsibilities: Agricultural finance markets have changed dramatically in the last decade with an explosion of new credit instruments, and new capital providers (e.g., REITs, Institutional funds, secondary markets). The regulatory framework for capital providers has also changed dramatically, as have the market shares of major players, and the needs of producers. The evolving agricultural finance sector presents a host of challenges to farmers, bankers and policy-makers and the proposed position would contribute to solutions through the development of an extension and research program addressing crucial agricultural finance market issues and problems. The position will be a key component of the Department’s comprehensive and award-winning farmdoc extension outreach program (http://farmdoc.illinois.edu/) and will also have opportunities to engage with the TIAA Center for Farmland Research.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized extension and applied research program in agricultural finance involving interaction with extension clientele in the agricultural finance community and contributions to farmdoc daily (http://farmdocdaily.illinois.edu/). The position will also contribute to the Department’s undergraduate programs by teaching one course per year on finance, risk, or other aspects of applied economics.


Qualifications: Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Consumer Economics, Consumer Finance, Economics, Finance, or related fields.

Department: The mission of the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics is to improve the economic and environmental well-being of producers, consumers, and families by drawing on faculty expertise in economics, business, and law. The Department has about 30 faculty members with expertise in teaching, research, and outreach in applied economics, business, law, applied finance, policy analysis or public policy. Currently about 650 undergraduate students and 80 graduate students are enrolled in the Department.

Salary/Appointment: Competitive; based on qualifications and rank; 9-month academic year; tenure track; 45% extension, 30% research, 25% teaching.
