The Global Commerce program at Denison University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor or senior level beginning in Fall 2020. Global Commerce is an interdisciplinary major started in 2016 that trains students to think critically and creatively, in the liberal arts tradition, about how global organizations, structures of trade, and social practices shape both for-profit and non-profit activity. Field of specialization for this position is International Economics. Teaching responsibilities will include GC 301: Global Financial Markets, rotating responsibilities for the senior capstone course, creating an applied statistics course for Global Commerce majors, and possible opportunities to teach other GC Core Courses. (For details on our Global Commerce curriculum and course descriptions, please see: https://denison.edu/academics/global-commerce.) The successful candidate will also have regular opportunities to teach topical seminars investigating the structures, strategies, cultures, and contexts of global business and non-profit organizations. The teaching load is 5 courses per year, the largest of which is capped at 28 students.
Applicants must have a commitment to a liberal arts approach to education, superior teaching skills, and a clearly articulated desire to contribute to the development of this innovative interdisciplinary program. Research focus must be in the area of international economics and should complement existing Global Commerce expertise. Additional work experience in the business or non-profit sectors and a willingness to help foster connections between our Global Commerce program and outside practitioners are desirable.
Denison University is an academically rigorous residential liberal arts college enrolling approximately 2200 students from across the nation and around the world. Denison University is an increasingly diverse, highly selective, and nationally ranked residential liberal arts college located in Granville, Ohio, 30 minutes east of the Columbus metropolitan area (experiencecolumbus.com). Our college and the Global Commerce program are committed to attracting and supporting an academically and culturally diverse faculty who are successful and effective teachers, who develop active and productive research programs, and who are involved in the life of the college.
We will begin reviewing applications on November 15 and will continue to accept applications until the position is filled. We will conduct interviews with prospective candidates at the American Economic Association meeting in San Diego. Candidates with a PhD in hand and candidates who are ABD will be considered, as long as the PhD is completed within one year of the start date. Preference will be given to candidates who plan to complete the PhD prior to the start of the 2020 fall semester.
Applicants should submit the following electronic application materials on-line at employment.denison.edu: a cover letter that includes discussion of interest in our interdisciplinary approach to Global Commerce, commitment to liberal arts teaching, a brief description of the candidate’s research agenda, and a statement addressing the potential to foster and support diversity among our students, faculty, and community; curriculum vitae; two proposed Global Commerce syllabi (one for GC 301: Global Financial Markets, and the second for another core Global Commerce course listed on our website or for an upper-level Global Commerce seminar that reflects the candidate’s areas of expertise and interests); three letters of recommendation from academic references; and other supporting documents.
