The Central Bank of Chile seeks recent PhD (in Economics, Statistics or Computer Science) graduates, or established policy economist with expertise in economics and data science to join the Microdata Unit in the Monetary Policy Division. Prior experience working in Central Banks, international institutions, or with big data is an asset. Researchers are expected to conduct policy-oriented research using large datasets of the Chilean economy to develop novel applied economic or machine learning methods applications to study issues of interest of the Bank’s Board of Directors or Chief Economist. The Bank collects and maintains large datasets (eg. Customs declarations, firms’ balance sheets, business-to-business transactions, matched employer-employee, and several expectations surveys among others) making it an excellent environment for someone with an applied econometrics or machine learning background. Funding for travelling and a large inflow of visitors throughout the year ensure strong international exposure. The Bank currently employs more than 40 PhD graduates in its different departments.
This is an ideal position for someone looking to contribute with their work to policy debate and publishing their work in top international journals. The successful candidate must have an interest in developing a policy relevant research agenda, develop novel machine learning methods and applications, excellent understanding of the latest applied economic methods, ability to interpret empirical findings with economic theory, and fluency in working with packages such as Phyton, R, STATA, etc. He or she must also possess superior writing and speaking skills.
