The African American Studies Program at the University of Florida, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position to begin on August 16, 2021. The search committee is seeking an applied microeconomist whose research addresses the impact of racial discrimination in labor, education, housing, and/or health. This position in African American Studies is part of a nationally-focused cluster and will play a central role in moving the current program in the African American Studies towards departmental status.
We are therefore, seeking candidates who have experiences in curriculum and departmental development. The African American Studies Program seeks to hire faculty who are engaged in research that examines African American issues, add to our program’s intellectual diversity, and reflect the interests of our undergraduate students.

A Ph.D. in African American Studies is preferred; or Ph.D. in economics with a research, teaching expertise in African American economics, together with a demonstrated commitment to the African American Studies program’s mission and values. The program strives to provide innovative, compelling, and strategic research and teaching to both academic audiences as well as the local and national community. Core strategic priorities include:
• Research that examines the African American experience in a transnational context from a broad base of disciplinary theories;
• Community-based outreach and learning; and
• Teaching and skills development that introduces students from all disciplinary areas to African American intellectual history, critical theory, and professional development.

The successful applicant is expected to teach two courses per fall and two courses per spring semester, with a mix of introductory and advanced undergraduate courses. The ability to develop experiential learning opportunities for undergraduates and excel in mentoring undergraduate research and experience in developing a department. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, and includes a full benefits package.
