GAO (www.gao.gov) anticipates openings for economist positions. GAO is the oversight agency for the U.S. Congress. GAO contributes non-partisan, fact-based, objective analyses on federal government programs and policy. We seek PhD economists and PhD economics candidates who expect their degree in 2022. Candidates must have strong applied research and interpersonal skills. U.S. citizenship is required.
Since 2011, GAO has received top ranking among mid-size federal agencies for best workplace and support of diversity. GAO seeks a work environment where all employees are valued, treated fairly, and given opportunities to develop to their full potential.
Openings are anticipated in these mission teams:
Center for Economics, housed in GAO’s Applied Research and Methods unit--- The Center is a diverse group of 30 PhD economists who contribute economic expertise and analyses to GAO reports. Economists in the Center have the flexibility to work with all of GAO’s public policy teams across all sectors of the economy and government and, on occasion, lead studies. The Center seeks economists in all fields with strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
Education, Workforce and Income Security (EWIS)—EWIS examines policy questions related to K-12 and higher education, employment and training, disability, and retirement security. Current and recent studies include an examination of the wealth and income distribution of older Americans, an analysis of proposed changes within the Federal Employees Compensation Act, and research on other current policy issues such as the federal school-meals program and womens’ retirement security.
