The School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Professor. Applicants with exceptional qualifications at the rank of Associate Professor will also be considered. This recruitment is part of a major strategic initiative in the UAB School of Public Health to expand research capacity in climate and public health. The ideal candidate will have strong management abilities and will be expected to recruit and direct a core group of faculty in developing a comprehensive research program in the broad area of climate and health.

We seek an outstanding scholar who demonstrates a strong interest or experience in interdisciplinary public health research and teaching with respect to the following area: climate change and effects on the environment that impact or have the potential to impact public health using controlled experimentation, field methods, population-based methods, pricing and regulation and/or modeling approaches. Candidates with expertise in climate and health within public health including but not limited to the fields of biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, health behaviors, and health care organization and policy in addition to subdisciplines within these broad domains of public health are encouraged to apply. Opportunities exist to interface with a cadre of well-established academic scientists carrying out federally funded climate change related research in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences, across the university, and beyond.

Founded in 1978, the UAB School of Public Health has grown to 75 full-time faculty and 1100 students. In 2019, the school had more than $37 million in research funding and has been ranked in the top 20 NIH-funded Schools of Public Health for the last 10 years. Diversity is one of the school’s values and strengths, with 45% of students identifying as a member of an underrepresented racial/ethnic group and 16% identifying as a first-generation college student. UAB IT Research Computing maintains the Cheaha Supercomputer, the largest and fastest supercomputer in the state of Alabama with a theoretical throughput of approximately 528 TFLOPS that consists of over 3500 CPU cores and 72 NVIDIA-P100 GPU’s. Cheaha is supported by a high-speed parallel file system that can store 6 PB of data (raw) interconnected by a high-speed infiniband network. Spanning more than 100 city blocks, UAB is the state of Alabama’s largest single employer with some 25,000 employees and has an annual, state-wide economic impact exceeding $7.15 billion.

Qualifications
Applicants must possess a doctoral degree in a public health discipline or a related field and demonstrate excellence in research and teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels. High ranking candidates will have an exemplary record of research and teaching excellence, leadership experience, and expertise in developing a nationally and/or internationally recognized, externally funded research program.
