The position is assigned to the research group of Professor Akcigit within the Department of Structural Change and Productivity at the IWH and will be initially financed for two years. An extension by one year is envisaged. The place of employment is Halle (Saale), Germany.
Ufuk Akcigit is a leading economist in the fields of macroeconomics, entrepreneurship, innovation and firm dynamics. The IWH is one of seven leading economics research institutes in Germany and focuses on research on labour, finance and productivity. The research group is led by Ufuk Akcigit and focusses on why economic disparity still exists between eastern and western Germany 30 years after the fall of the Berlin wall. The IWH complements this research by its long-standing expertise on the East German economy and its focus on factor allocation and productivity. The Institute is running a large-scale EU project on productivity (www.microprod.eu), hosting the Competitiveness Research Network (www.comp-net.org), and providing unique microdata on EU productivity as well as novel data on the privatisation process of state owned socialist companies after German unification.
What we offer
You will be part of a dynamic international team of younger scholars under the guidance of Ufuk Akcigit and Steffen Müller, who is heading the IWH department on Structural Change and Productivity. You will be given the opportunity to conduct cutting edge economic research. There are no teaching obligations and you will not be required to contribute to any other projects at the IWH. The Halle Institute for Economic Research is closely linked with the national and international scientific community and offers excellent opportunities to build up a competitive publication record.
What we expect
You hold a high-quality PhD in economics or related fields or you are close to finish your PhD in these fields. You have a solid background in microeconometrics and ideally some experience with empirical work with big data and computational economics. You would be willing to spent time at the University of Chicago if needed.
