Postdoctoral Research Position in Insurance and Risk Management

The Center for Insurance Policy and Research (CIPR) at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral research position. The CIPR seeks applicants with expertise in quantitative analysis of key insurance issues related to at least one of the following: heath and long-term care; natural catastrophes/climate and resiliency; artificial intelligence and big data; data privacy and cyber risk; socioeconomic and demographic insurance disparities; and international insurance supervision. We seek applicants with background in empirical economics, risk analysis, insurance markets, and/or data analytics. Applied research analyses utilizing these skills will be conducted to help inform NAIC regulatory members on key insurance issues of concern, with an emphasis on leveraging available NAIC data for the research where applicable. Clear and concise presentation of research results in various formats is also expected. Post-doctoral fellows will spend a significant amount of their time on CIPR research projects working with the CIPR Director and research team as well as related NAIC staff, while also having time to continue to pursue their own related research. Postdoctoral fellows must have received their PhD in the last two years in a related field such as economics, finance, or risk management and insurance. We plan to undertake first-round interviews in Winter of 2022. Tentative Start date: Spring 2022

Postdoctoral Research Position in Behavioral Science related to Insurance

The Center for Insurance Policy and Research (CIPR) at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral research position. The CIPR seeks applicants with expertise in quantitative and/or qualitative analysis of key insurance issues related to at least one of the following: heath and long-term care; natural catastrophes/climate and resiliency; artificial intelligence and big data; data privacy and cyber risk; and socioeconomic and demographic insurance disparities. We seek applicants with background in data analytics, survey/experiment development and analysis, decision-making and/or behavioral science. Applied research analyses utilizing these skills will be conducted to help inform NAIC regulatory members on key insurance issues of concern, with an emphasis on leveraging available NAIC data for the research where applicable, and/or through primary data collection. Clear and concise presentation of research results in various formats is also expected. Post-doctoral fellows will spend a significant amount of their time on CIPR research projects working with the CIPR Director and research team as well as related NAIC staff, while also having time to continue to pursue their own related research. Postdoctoral fellows must have received their PhD in the last two years in a related field such as behavioral science, decision science, economics, or risk management and insurance. We plan to undertake first-round interviews in Spring 2022. Tentative Start date: Spring or Summer 2022



Postdoctoral Research Position in Financial and Systemic Risks

The Center for Insurance Policy and Research (CIPR) at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral research position in the area of financial and systemic risks. Specifically, the CIPR seeks applicants with expertise in data analytics and quantitative analysis to assist in our assessment of financial and systemic risks facing the U.S. insurance industry. A key role will involve active participation in the evolving NAIC’s Macroprudential Initiative. This activity will include evaluation of appropriate data and metrics for further development and refinement of the Macroprudential Risk Assessment Program, the assessment of concentration of counterparties in insurance company transactions, and participation in the development, refinement, and application of stress testing frameworks, including those related to liquidity, capital adequacy, and climate. The role involves a close working relationship with the NAIC’s Financial Regulatory Services Department, Capital Markets Bureau, and potentially its international insurance relations team to complete industry analysis reports, improve analytical profiles by lines of business, and provide input where additional analysis is needed. Post-doctoral fellows will spend a significant amount of their time on NAIC research projects working with the CIPR Director and research team as well as related NAIC staff, while also having time to continue the pursuit of their own research agenda. Postdoctoral fellows must have received their PhD in the last two years in a related field such as economics, finance, risk management and insurance, or a closely related field. We plan to undertake first-round interviews in Spring and Summer of 2022. Tentative Start date: January – June 2022

Location: Kansas City, MO – USA (preferred location); potential consideration for New York City or Washington DC offices is possible


Length: 1 year with the possibility of extending based on year 1 evaluation


Status: Full Time/Temporary


Minimum requirements:
Applicants must have a Ph.D. (expected completion by the summer of 2022 is acceptable) from an accredited institution in a related field. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
