The Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs seeks a Senior Staff Associate II (Officer of Research) to support original research on domestic and/or international energy policy, geopolitics, technology, equality and justice, markets, development, oil and gas, natural gas, hydrogen, electricity, carbontech, or other relevant areas (e.g., the energy transition to zero-carbon fuels, energy and public health).
The incumbent will use expertise about the research subject and independently design, execute and interpret research, conduct literature reviews; generate, analyze and visualize data. The incumbent will regularly contribute to outputs including peer-reviewed journal articles, research reports, issue briefs, op-eds, present at conferences, seminars and/or events. Look for funding opportunities or collaborations related to research. Under the direction of a PI, assist with grant applications and manage junior staff members.
The position will leverage linkages between other areas of ongoing work across the Earth Institute, Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy, and Columbia University more broadly, including its Climate School. The position will engage at a high level with key stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include, but are not limited, to the following:
● Manage significant portions of the research project, including the project support team
● Work independently to design, execute and interpret research working in a collaborative research environment.
● Contribute outputs including peer-reviewed journal articles, research reports, issue briefs, op-eds, present at conferences, seminars and events.
● Provide leadership and expertise in identifying and completing research grant applications.
● Support PI in management of financial resources, and grant management (including research and financial reporting) as needed.
● Provide comprehensive understanding of research techniques, tools, software and instruments used in projects.
● Audit current protocols, design, applications or software used in support of the project, and take a new perspective to improve, develop and implement new solutions.
Minimum Qualifications for Grade:
● Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field (science, engineering, public policy, economics, international affairs, political science, etc.)
● At least 10 years of professional experience across some combination of the following topics: the power sector, electricity markets, renewable energy, natural gas, energy infrastructure development, energy investment, energy markets, energy policy, energy justice, the energy sector, and/or climate policy. Time spent pursuing graduate education may substitute for professional experience requirements.
● Verbal communication skills as well as excellent writing and copy-editing skills.
● Project management skills, excellent management of internal and external communications, and extraordinary attention to detail.
● Previous experience using independent judgement in a research setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
● Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in relevant field (science, engineering, public policy, economics, international affairs, political science, etc.)
● Experience in developing and utilizing quantitative tools and qualitative methods for policy and/or technical analysis
● Experience with grant applications and management
● Publication record that includes a combination of peer-reviewed journal, research reports, issue briefs, op-eds, and other outputs
● Strong language skills, including proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English
