AIR is recruiting new PhD economists to join our established team of health economists working on domestic policy issues in our Health Division.

We conduct healthcare program evaluation studies, support the operations of alternative payment models, and analyze various financial and quality measures. Our project portfolio spans across federal agencies, including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), MedPAC, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the Agency for Health Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE), and the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), among others. AIR is committed to supporting the professional development of our staff. We have in-house data and funds to support internal research that advances our mission. We also support the publication of dissertation thesis for new PhDs with covered time.

The Health Economist works collaboratively with other team members to conduct policy-relevant research and evaluation studies focused on domestic health care programs. Typical tasks include data management; mixed-methods methodological design; specification of econometric models; programming claims data analysis; interpreting findings; writing reports; proposal writing.

Candidates hired for the position might initially start working remotely but will eventually have the option to work from one of our U.S. office locations or continue to work remotely based in the U.S.

The responsibilities for the position include:
Researching and supporting innovative delivery and payment models intended to improve quality of care,
enhance patient satisfaction, and reduce healthcare costs
Analyzing large data sets including Medicare and Medicaid claims data
Conducting quantitative analyses
Writing technical reports and proposals
Making presentations to government clients
Supervising and mentoring junior research staff
Foster an environment that embraces diverse perspectives, abilities, racial/ethnic and cultural
backgrounds, ages, gender identities and expressions, educational experiences, and life stories 

Education, Knowledge, and Experience:
Ph.D. (or other advanced degree) in economics, public policy, or a related social science field
Strong quantitative skills
Experience and knowledge of experimental and quasi-experimental designs;
Previous internship or work experience conducting applied policy related research for federal or state
agencies, although not required will be heavily weighted
Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical material orally and in writing to non-academic
audiences
Must be available to start employment by June, 2023.
