Full Text of JOE Listing:

The Department of Economics & Finance at the University of Dayton is excited to announce a call for applications for the Thomas W. Albrecht Endowed Chair in Capitalism and the Common Good. This newly endowed position seeks to advance the understanding of the role of capitalism in contributing to the common good and support connections between economics and other disciplines in the spirit of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. This is a 12 month tenured appointment beginning July 1, 2024.

The successful candidate will have an established research in well respected outlets, and a research agenda focused on how markets affect society and contribute to the common good. This could be from any subfield of economics (e.g., labor, health, public, etc.) and we encourage anyone to apply whose research agenda connects to the impact of markets on general welfare.

The department also seeks candidates who will engage the campus community regarding capitalism and the common good. In the classroom, the Albrecht Chair will develop and teach coursework on economics and the common good (in addition to other coursework according to the needs of the department). The department envisions some of this coursework will be interdisciplinary and support components of the university’s Common Academic Program, such as Practical Ethical Action or Vocation. Outside the classroom, the Albrecht Chair will develop extracurricular and cross-disciplinary activities to engage students across campus. Applicants should have demonstrated an ability to design and deliver effective courses and be able to articulate how they would work with the campus community to engage students and colleagues on these ideas.

Finally, the successful candidate will promote an interdisciplinary dialogue between scholars, business leaders, policymakers, and religious leaders on capitalism and the common good, as understood by Catholic Social Teaching. Applicants should be able to articulate their vision for how this dialogue could come about and provide benefit to our campus community.
