To enhance the diversity of the economics research community, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) offers an outstanding early-career economist who is a member of a group that historically has been under-represented in the economics profession, or whose research contributes to advancing the diversity of the economics profession, the opportunity to visit NBER’s Cambridge office for a year of intensive research. The applicant’s research may fall in any field of applied economics. Applications from researchers who are just completing their PhDs and from junior faculty members who may be able to combine this fellowship with an early career leave are welcome.

The fellowship offers a 12-month stipend of $95,000, reimbursement for health insurance, a limited budget for research expenses, and an office at the NBER’s Cambridge headquarters. The fellow will be expected to spend the academic year at the NBER. Fellowship-related activities should represent the fellow’s primary responsibility.

Applicants must have completed their PhD by June, 2024. NBER strongly encourages applications from women, members of groups that have been under-represented in the economics profession, individuals with disabilities, and veterans. Applicants must be US Citizens or permanent residents.
