The Bureau of Labor Statistics has an opening for a junior or senior PhD Research Economist on the Employment Research and Program Development staff. Duties are equally divided between (1) self-directed research, and (2) activities that enhance the quality and usefulness of BLS programs and data. Self-directed research activities include publishing in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at conferences and participating in internal seminars. Program and data enhancement activities include research to improve measurement concepts and estimation methodology. These activities involve a range of BLS data, such as the Current Population Survey, the Current Employment Statistics establishment survey, the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, and the Occupational Employment and Wage Survey.
While economists from a variety of backgrounds will be considered, applicants with research interests in labor economics and quantitative methods are especially encouraged to apply. An interest in measurement issues related to surveys and/or administrative data is a plus. Applicants should have a PhD or expect one by September 2024. Candidates must be U.S. citizens at the time of application.
