Full Text of JOE Listing:

The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia seeks to fill a tenure-line Associate or Full Professor faculty position in public policy and economics, with a start date in Fall 2024. We invite applications from candidates who have earned their doctorate in economics, quantitative public policy, or a closely related field.

We have a special interest in policy-relevant research that combines individual and population data on the personal, environmental, and social determinants of health to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations and to reduce health disparities. This research focus aligns with the University of Virginia’s Grand Challenges research investments in precision medicine and health.

The successful candidate will: have a sustained career of scholarly productivity related to the economics of health and health care policy, with research of exceptional quality and impact; have the desire and ability to connect research across disciplines and engage with external partners such as policymakers, organizations, and community groups; have a record of outstanding teaching in courses on economics, research methods, and/or public policy, preferably at both the undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MPP) levels; have a desire to contribute to the Batten and UVA missions through service, student and faculty mentorship, and support of a collaborative, diverse community bound together by values of honor, integrity, trust, and respect.

Built upon the strong foundation of one of the nation’s top public universities, the Batten School combines rigorous training in policy analysis with a unique emphasis on the acquisition of leadership skills. Members of the research faculty have backgrounds in economics, psychology, political science, and public administration and policy. The school is further enriched by professors of practice who bring real-world policymaking expertise to the classroom. The Batten School currently offers an MPP degree and an undergraduate major and minor in public policy and leadership, as well as multiple dual degree programs with other UVA units.

The Batten School is a dynamic cross-disciplinary school offering highly competitive teaching loads, salaries, and research support. The Batten School is committed to faculty growth and is conducting multiple searches this year. While the primary appointment is in the Batten School, a joint/courtesy appointment could be possible in the Department of Economics or other UVA schools and departments, depending on the candidate’s interests and qualifications.

The University of Virginia's 2030 plan recognizes Precision Medicine/Precision Health as a major societal challenge and an opportunity for multidisciplinary work that draws on our existing strengths. In partnership the Provost and the deans of various schools are making multiple coordinated faculty recruitments to strengthen the research community focusing on Precision Health for Populations across the University. Recruits will receive support from the Provost and from their school and will participate in the Precision Health for Populations Initiative. This is part of a major Grand Challenges research investment of over $50M in Precision Medicine/Precision Health (https://news.virginia.edu/content/grand-challenges-fight-cancer-rural-va-support-youth-mental-health-democracy).
