International Growth Centre
Director of Research
Salary expectation is in the range of £80,006 to £89,969, with possibility of significant pay supplements for exceptional candidates
The IGC works with policymakers in developing countries to promote inclusive and sustainable growth through pathbreaking research. We are a global research centre with a network of world-leading researchers and in-country teams and initiatives working across Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. Based at LSE and in partnership with Oxford, we are majority funded by the UK FCDO. Our resident country teams enable us to develop long-term, research-based learning partnerships with governments. We work to improve the productivity of people and firms as the key driver of sustainable economic development.
We are seeking an exceptional Director of Research to provide vision and leadership for IGC’s research activities and to help drive IGC’s strategic thinking as part of the Senior Management Team. Reporting to Jonathan Leape, Executive Director, and working closely with Robin Burgess and Paul Collier (IGC Directors at LSE and Oxford) and the IGC’s Research Programme Directors, you will be responsible for leading and implementing the new research strategy and for ensuring that IGC research has high academic and policy impact. You will work with some of the world’s top economic growth thinkers across our four research areas (Firms, State, Energy and Cities) and lead a dynamic team of programme and initiative heads in an intellectually challenging, innovative, and collaborative environment. You will bring curiosity, ambition, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a passion for IGC’s co-generation model of researchers working in close partnerships with policy makers. You will be a strategic thinker with experience in academic research and in research-driven policy engagement and with a hands-on, team-oriented approach.
The position is based in the IGC head office at LSE, with the possibility of some remote work. It is offered on an open-ended basis to September 2026, renewable subject to funding. We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave and excellent training and development opportunities. For this post, we can offer visa sponsorship to the successful candidate subject to prevailing UK government requirements.
