The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) is a small, nonpartisan support agency that provides independent policy and technical advice to the Congress on issues affecting the Medicare program. The Research Director will help develop, oversee, and review staff analyses in support of the Commission’s analytic agenda.

The Research Director has the following responsibilities:
• Advise the Executive Director about how to strategically enhance MedPAC’s analytic capacity
• Review research methods and analytic work plans, and provide technical feedback
• Review analytic results, suggest additional analyses for improving robustness, and assist in interpreting findings and identifying policy implications
• Develop, coordinate, and review special studies of Medicare payment policies in support of the Commission’s analytic agenda
• Develop, coordinate, and review special written projects, ranging from reports to the Congress, blog posts on MedPAC’s website, and papers for submission to peer-reviewed publications
• Help translate MedPAC’s technical analytic work for different audiences, including congressional staff and other health policy researchers, and increase transparency about analytic methods
• Mentor MedPAC analysts, including providing support with analyses, interpreting analytic results into policy discussions, and managing projects
• Communicate effectively with multiple research teams and executive staff

The Research Director is a health economics expert with:
• Experience conducting health economics research, writing health economics papers and reports, and presenting results in professional settings
• Superlative analytical skills, with graduate training in quantitative methods, including econometrics, statistics, or similar fields
• Experience managing or collaborating with other health policy researchers
• Extensive knowledge of health care policy, with preference given to Medicare payment policy
• Experience working in a nonpartisan, congressional support environment is a plus, though not required

A Ph.D. in economics, statistics, health/public policy, or related field is strongly preferred.

Candidates with a Ph.D. must have a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience after completion of graduate training.

Candidates with a master's degree in economics, statistics, health/public policy, or a related field, and a minimum of 15 years of relevant professional experience may be considered.
This is a full-time position in Washington, DC requiring an in-office presence three days per week and attend other in-person events, as needed.

Must be a U.S. citizen.
