AEA Statement on Anti-Asian Violence and Discrimination
The leadership of the American Economic Association is profoundly disturbed by the rising trend in harassment, discrimination, and violence against Asian Americans, Asians, and Pacific Islanders, a trend that has escalated since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and stands in solidarity with these communities at this tragic moment.
The Association condemns any and all forms of discrimination against Asian Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, and other groups, as stated in the Code of Conduct and Policy on Harassment and Discrimination. It hopes that sound social science, including economics, can lead to a better understanding of what motivates horrific events like those that occurred near Atlanta, GA, and other parts of the nation in the past week, and can also contribute solutions in the fight against racism.
The Association remains committed to fostering inclusivity in all of its programs and activities and calls on its members to redouble their efforts to effect the critical changes needed to improve the professional climate in economics.
