The AEA’s 2018 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia received wide coverage in the mainstream press. Bloomberg wrote a round-up of “Five Must-Read Studies” from the conference that included papers on America’s drug epidemic, online retail price inflation, and how the stock market can predict Federal Reserve rate cuts. Bloomberg and Inside Higher Ed wrote extensive features about gender discrimination in the profession, and many outlets including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Reuters, The Washington Post, and CNBC covered paper presentations and panel discussions. Writing for The New York Times, former AEA president Robert Shiller cited a session he chaired on "Confidence, Animal Spirits and Business Cycles" in a piece about consumer confidence. The Economist featured a paper by Harvard's Matthew Weinzierl and Al Roth's lecture on organ donation markets in a piece about economists making value judgments.
